Finalist, Norwegian State Architecture Prize 2025
Selected from 37 nominated projects, receiving an honourable mention as one of five finalists under the year’s theme, ‘good urban housing’.
Official announcementFrom ruin to site-specific homes
The site lies within a cultural heritage zone in Holmen, surrounded by wide streets, restored old timber houses and a park as its nearest neighbour. Through a participatory process with neighbours, the municipality and the city conservator, the building took shape with broad local support.
The project gave a long-awaited lift to an area facing social challenges, and has been described both nationally and locally as a project that gives the word ‘site-specific’ real content and meaning.
Urban repair at a small scale
The result is a piece of urban repair: the building meets today’s functional requirements while offering aesthetic variety and a balance between historic heritage and contemporary life. Volume, roof form and façade rhythm respond to the street and its neighbours.
